The depiction is of 'Mother Louse' — a satirical engraving of a 17th century alewife. An alewife would wear a tall hat to advertise her selling of ale at markets, something later bastardised to become the stereotype pointy Witch hat, along with her broom and cauldron. 🧙 Being an alewife, at that time, was one of few reliable means of ‘respectable’ incomes for women. An alewife could exist without a husband and was generally in charge of her own finances — even sometimes owning property. The rise of the European Witch hunts coincides with the male mass production of beer and, therefore, the removal of alewives from ale and beer history. This work is a collaboration between myself and Dinosaur Kilby at GLOAM in Sheffield. Endometriosis was first named in 1920, but symptoms of endometriosis have been documented in medical literature since this text in 1825 BCE. The symptoms here were really pathologised as being physical expressions of emotional distress, rather than actual physical symptoms; something that radiated throughout the European Witch hunts and into the 19th century of the times of female hysteria diagnoses. This was a time where Women, complaining of pain and symptoms of endometriosis, were treated by being accused of being ‘hysteric’ or mad. These Women were admitted to asylums and/or had to have very aggressive surgeries including removal of ovaries, hysterectomy and even lobotomies. The cases of hysterectomies is actually still being used, wrongly, in treating endometriosis. In Leah Hazard's book titled ‘Womb’, Leah writes that by point of surgery, often the person with endometriosis will have stage 3 or 4 before finally being taken seriously and referred for surgery. I say a ‘wrongful treatment of hysterectomy' here in cases when the endometriosis lesions have already spread, attaching itself to other organs, including outside of the pelvic cavity. These lesions go on to grow and further spread, so removal of any of the reproductive organs is redundant. In reflection of the rhetorics of hysteria, I think this feeling about Women and it being more psychological rather than an actual physical cause, persists today. As we see so Women are often frequently dismissed as being ‘neurotic’, anxious or a hypochondriac when they first mention their first symptoms of endometriosis. On average, 8 years later, she might be finally diagnosed. Doctors and those around them will tell them “this is an inevitable consequence of being female”. That this would “cure” my endometriosis – there is no evidence suggesting in any way that this is true, but I did look back in history to find where this falsification originated. It was Dr. Joe Meage, who was and still is a very influential American gynaecologist. He held a public lecture in the 1940s, where he announced that endometriosis was a disease "mainly seen in white, wealthy women who delay marriage and childbearing due to having careers." This idea of lack of childbearing in Women causing endometriosis echoes that of the Hippocratic Corpus, which was a text written around 1,500 years earlier between 5th and 3rd centuries BCE.
